The Annual Red Mass

The Red Mass is a tradition invoking God's blessings on those involved in the administration of justice and public officials, celebrated in honor of the Holy Spirit as the source of wisdom and understanding. Its name comes from the scarlet robes of attending royal judges and the red vestments of the celebrant, symbolizing the Holy Spirit.

Originating in 1245 in Paris, and later celebrated in London (1310) and Rome, it marked the opening of judicial years. In the United States, the tradition began in 1928 in New York City and is now widely celebrated, notably by members of the Supreme Court before their annual term opens.

The St. Thomas More Lawyers Society of Wisconsin has celebrated its own Red Mass since 1958. In the succeeding years, the Red Mass has grown to become the ceremonial highlight of the Society’s activities. Attendees of the Mass include members of the judiciary, civic leaders, lawyers, law school deans, law professors, and students of law.
